Programme 2023

Let’s be honest, it’s been a bit of a year, hasn’t it? Firstly there was that thing that happened, then those other things, and even now there’s all that stuff, am I right? How about we keep at least one thing simple for you: the SHOTORAMA 2023 programme!

The format for SHOTORAMA, like the line-up of instructors, is a little different every time. This year, you just… buy a ticket. That’s it. It’s amazing we never thought of it before?! Actually, it’s just that things got rather ahead of us and it seemed easier to do it this way, just to make sure we got to go ahead at all.

SHOTORAMA SCHEDULE

The schedule is planned as follows below. Everyone will be in the same room, but the intention is to split into two halves (approximately according to grade) and run workshops simultaneously. Everyone will train together for the final plenary session.

12:00 – 12:15 Welcome & Warm Up
12:15 – 13:00 Workshop Session 1
(10 mins break)
13:10 – 13:55 Workshop Session 2
(30 mins break)
14:25 – 15:10 Workshop Session 3
(10 mins break)
15:20 – 16:05 Workshop Session 4
(10 mins break)
16:15 – 17:00 Plenary Session & Farewell

IT’s SO SIMPLE

…but what do our charismatic and illustrious instructors have in store for you? Time to get excited!

Sensei Adam Purkiss: Off the Cuffs. Sensei Adam brings his well-known passion for both kumite and bunkai to bear on workshops full of drills that will have you smiling even as you hit the floor.

Sensei Steve Bailes: The Core of Kumite. Sensei Steve explores the world of kumite from the perspective of the humblest, but most devastating, weapon of shotokan: the gyaku zuki. Combinations, timing, strategy: the how, when, and why.

Sensei Frank Jennings: Bunkai in the Danger Zone. Sensei Frank will be dealing with bunkai up close to your opponent, highlighting the use of self-defence techniques at short range taken from heian kata.

Sensei Neil Jerome: Air Traffic Control. Sensei Neil invites you to reconnect breath to motion, and asks what happens when they are the same thing; using the mind to free the body, and probably more esoteric weirdness like that.

Sensei John Parnell: Kata & Tonic. Sensei John takes us away from the beaten track and into a land where kata exists beyond syllabus and competition. Immerse yourself in something new and challenging for no other reason than the joy of karate.

Way to go! Well done you.
